چکیده

We present an image overlay system that assists in surgical needle insertions inside conventional CT scanners. The device is mounted on the gantry of the CT scanner and consists of a flat LCD display and a semi-transparent mirror. In the preoperative calibration process the overlay system and the imaging plane of the scanner are registered. As a result, looking at the patient through the mirror, the CT image appears to be floating inside the patient with correct size and position providing the physician with two-dimensional ”X-ray vision” to guide needle placement procedures. The physician inserts the needle following the optimal path identified in the CT image that is rendered on the LCD and thereby reflected in the mirror. The system promises to increase needle placement accuracy and also to reduce X-ray dose, patient discomfort, and procedure time by eliminating faulty insertion attempts. We report phantom studies and cadaver experiments in several clinical applications.

Image overlay for CT-guided needle insertions.

OBJECTIVE We present a 2D image overlay device to assist needle placement on computed tomography (CT) scanners. MATERIALS AND METHODS The system consists of a flat display and a semitransparent mirror mounted on the gantry. When the physician looks at the patient through the mirror, the CT image appears to be floating inside the body with correct size and position as if the physician had 2D '...

Registration and motion compensation of a needle placement robot for CT-guided spinal procedures

Computed tomography (CT) guided needle placement is an established practice in the medical field. The efficacy of these procedures is related to the accuracy of needle placement. Current free-hand techniques have limitations in accuracy, which is often affected by the patient motion. In response to these problems and as a testbed for future developments, we propose a robotically assisted needle...

Biomedical Paper System for Robotically Assisted Percutaneous Procedures with Computed Tomography Guidance

We present the prototype of an image-guided robotic system for accurate and consistent placement of percutaneous needles in soft-tissue targets under CT guidance inside the gantry of a CT scanner. The couch-mounted system consists of a seven-degrees-of-freedom passive mounting arm, a remote center-of-motion robot, and a motorized needle-insertion device. Singleimage-based coregistration of the ...

MRI image overlay: application to arthrography needle insertion.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) offers great potential for planning, guiding, monitoring and controlling interventions. MR arthrography (MRAr) is the imaging gold standard for assessing small ligament and fibrocartilage injury in joints. In contemporary practice, MRAr consists of two consecutive sessions: (1) an interventional session where a needle is driven to the joint space and MR contrast...
